Karen Hutchinson has inspired those around her to get moving to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
As part of MS Awareness Week from June 1 to 7, the Drummoyne resident will take part in the annual MS Walk and Fun Run next month.
Karen has organised more than 50 people to join her team, Never Say Never, to help raise funds for MS Australia.
"I have people from all over joining my team including people overseas who will be doing their own walk in London," Karen said.
MS is a degenerative condition which affects the central nervous system
Karen was herself diagnosed with MS in 2003. A long-time runner, she wanted to join the fundraising walk soon after her diagnosis but was told she faced intense preparation to participate.
"A positive attitude is definitely key," Karen said.
"You need to say to yourself, 'what can I physically do to maintain control even though I have lost control in some areas?'" she said.
Karen worked with a trainer and yoga instructor to build up her balance and leg strength and this year will be her second event.
MS affects 18,000 Australians and is the most common disease of the central nervous system for young adults. The causes of the condition are unknown and no cure exists.
All funds raised from the walk will go toward research and assistance for people with MS.
"We fundraise to find the causes, and from there to find the cure," Karen said.
The event begins in Hyde Park and there are three walks available. Visit www.msaustralia.org.au for details.
