The first four-car Outer Suburban Carriage (OSCAR) train will begin running on NSW railway tracks late next week.
RailCorp chief executive Vince Graham said an OSCAR train would begin running on the Illawarra line next Thursday and another 122 carriages would gradually come into service next year.
A range of technical problems prevented the OSCAR carriages from coming into service late last year.
"One train and a driver training program means we are able to bring this train into service every Thursday (and) Friday throughout January and that will enable us to then ramp up our training," Mr Graham told reporters.
"And as we receive delivery of additional trains, we can reliably, robustly bring them into service."
Opposition transport spokeswoman Gladys Berejiklian said the introduction of the first OSCAR was too little, too late.
"These carriages are nearly two years late, $37 million over budget and have only seen service at Labor's media conferences," Ms Berejiklian said in a statement.
